What makes a legacy last? | The Zahra Trust

A lasting legacy is not defined by what a person owns or achieves in a material sense. In Islam, legacy is measured by the impact a person leaves behind, the goodness they spread, and the benefits that continue after their time in this world has ended.

From the perspective of the teachings of the Ahlulbayt (as), legacy is something active and ongoing. It is not frozen in history. It continues to grow through the people one has helped, the knowledge one has shared, and the positive change one has inspired.

The Holy Quran reminds believers of the eternal value of sincere giving:

“Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and openly, for them is their reward with their Lord, and they shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (2:274)

This verse highlights that when actions are done sincerely for Allah (swt), their reward is محفوظ and continuous, forming the foundation of a lasting legacy.

The Quranic foundation of a lasting legacy

The Quran reframes how success is understood. It is not measured by accumulation, but by contribution. What is given sincerely in the way of Allah (swt) never disappears. Instead, it becomes part of an eternal record.

A lasting legacy is therefore built on actions that continue to benefit others over time. Verse 274 of Surah al-Baqarah emphasizes that giving is not limited to a single moment. It creates a continuous spiritual return that remains with Allah (swt), even when the giver is no longer in this world.

This understanding encourages believers to think beyond immediate outcomes and focus on long-term benefit. The question becomes not just what impact can be made today, but what impact will continue tomorrow.

Legacy through impact and intention

A lasting legacy is shaped not only by major achievements but by consistent character. It is formed through daily actions, intentions, and the way one treats others.

Imam al-Sadiq (as) is reported to have said:

“People live by their goodness towards others more than they do according to their (predestined) life terms; they also die due to their sins more than they die due to the end of their terms.”

Bihar al-Anwar, v.5, p.140, n.7

This hadith highlights a deep truth. Human life is closely tied to behaviour and moral conduct. Goodness adds meaning and depth to life, while wrongdoing diminishes its value.

A legacy is therefore not accidental. It is intentionally built through kindness, service, and integrity shown consistently over time.

Ongoing reward and sadaqah jariyah

One of the most important foundations of a lasting legacy in Islam is the concept of ongoing reward, known as Sadaqah Jariyah. This refers to rewards that continue even after a person has passed away.

Imam al-Sadiq (as) is reported to have said:

“Nothing of the rewards follow a deceased after his death except three qualities: A charity that he established in his lifetime, it continues after his death; a good practice (sunnah) of guidance that he established upon which people act after his death; or a virtuous child who prays for him.”

Al-Kafi, v.7, ch.36, n.193

This narration shows that legacy continues through actions that outlive the individual. It is sustained through ongoing benefit, not just initial effort.

In another narration of Imam al-Sadiq (as), this idea is expanded further:

“Six things continue to benefit a believer after his death: a child who seeks forgiveness for him, a Quran that he leaves behind, a tree that he plants, a well that he digs, a charity that he establishes, and a good practice (sunnah) that is followed after him.”

Man La Yahduruh al-Faqih, v.4, ch. 127, n.612

These examples demonstrate that Islam encourages believers to invest in actions that continue to serve others long after they are gone.

Continuity of good deeds and divine love

Islamic teachings place strong emphasis on consistency rather than scale. Small actions, when done regularly and sincerely, carry immense value.

Imam al-Baqir (as) is reported to have said:

“The most beloved deed in the sight of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy is that which is continued, even though it is very little.”

Al-Kafi, v.2, ch.41, n.214

This hadith reshapes how legacy is understood. It is not about occasional large acts, but about steady, continuous goodness that never stops.

Over time, these consistent actions build a powerful and lasting impact that becomes part of one’s eternal record.

Loyalty through the example of the Ahlulbayt (as)

The Ahlulbayt (as), particularly Imam Hussain (as), provide the most powerful example of a lasting legacy. The message of Karbala was not limited to a single moment in history. It became a living movement of truth, justice, and sacrifice.

Imam Hussain (as) stood for principles that continue to inspire generations. His legacy is preserved not only through remembrance, but through action. Every act of justice, every effort to support those in need, and every stand against oppression reflects the continuation of his message.

This is what transforms legacy from memory into ongoing influence. It becomes something that shapes behaviour, values, and choices across generations.

A true lasting legacy is one that reflects these principles in everyday life.

Legacy beyond Muharram

Muharram is a time of reflection, remembrance, and renewed connection with faith. However, its purpose is not limited to a temporary season. It is meant to inspire lasting transformation.

A lasting legacy is one that continues beyond Muharram. It is built through ongoing generosity and continuous support for those in need throughout the year.

Let your remembrance continue long after Muharram ends. Support efforts that create ongoing reward and lasting impact.

A legacy that lives on is one that carries forward the message of Karbala. It is a commitment to give beyond a season and to invest in actions that continue to serve humanity long after the moment has passed.

Building your own lasting legacy

A lasting legacy is not created in a single moment. It is built through intention, consistency, and sincere action that benefits others. The Quran and the teachings of the Ahlulbayt (as) remind us that what truly lasts is what continues to bring good after we are gone.

As Muharram inspires reflection, it also encourages action that extends beyond the moment. The goal is to carry that spirit into everyday life.

Let your impact continue beyond your lifetime. Let your giving remain ongoing. Let your legacy be one that truly lasts.
