On Monday morning, 6th February 2023, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit southern Turkiye and surrounding regions has now killed over 50,000 people. Thousands of people went missing, believed to be trapped under rubble as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area to save them before it was too late.

The number of people injured was more than 100,000, while the ones affected and displaced are in the millions.

Tens of thousands of buildings have been destroyed, and a staggering 23+ million people are affected, most of them left homeless or displaced with no means to access food, clean water, shelter or other basic necessities.

Many of these families have already suffered through conflict, disaster, and chronic poverty, and the effects of the earthquake will now leave thousands- if not millions- of families entirely and utterly destitute.

While families struggle to come to terms with losing their loved ones and their homes, hospitals also struggle to cope with the enormous influx of casualties and urgently require resources.

The Zahra(s) Trust Canada’s local team mobilized as the disaster unfolded to provide immediate support following a rapid needs assessment.

Our local field team is working tirelessly to ensure families receive urgent aid and assistance. So far, we have provided the following:

• Food items for thousands of displaced people, including thousands of one-month family food parcels
• Baby milk formula and diapers
• Personal hygiene kits and disposable sanitary items
• Blankets for families left in the cold
• Informal mobile clinics with doctors to administer critical care
• Medicines and medical equipment
• Medicine storage units for hospitals

The Zahra(s) Trust Canada was collecting and dispersing aid to victims in Syria in partnership with UNHCR Canada; however, this humanitarian support partnership will end in July 2023 as per regulatory requirements.

We need your support to provide relief to the victims of this earthquake.
