Ghadeer: The moment Wilayah was declared
As Prophet Muhammad (saww) returned from his final Hajj, he stopped the Muslim community at a place called Ghadeer Khumm.
There, under the desert sun, he delivered a historic sermon that continues to shape Islamic belief today.
For Shia Muslims, Ghadeer was the moment Wilayah was publicly declared.
Allah (swt) says in the Holy Qur’an:
“O Messenger! Convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord…”
Surah Al-Ma’idah, Ayah 67
According to Shia teachings, this verse emphasized the importance of announcing Imam Ali’s (as) leadership to the Ummah.
The event of Ghadeer Khumm
At Ghadeer Khumm, the Prophet (saww) gathered the Muslims and spoke about guidance, faith, and leadership after him.
He then raised Imam Ali’s (as) hand and declared:
“For whoever I am his Mawla, Ali is his Mawla.”
For Shia Muslims, this declaration confirmed Imam Ali’s (as) divinely appointed leadership and authority.
