The First to Stand with Imam Hussain (as): The Courage and Martyrdom of Muslim ibn Aqeel (as)
Before the tragedy of Karbala unfolded, another sacrifice had already set its course in motion.
That sacrifice belonged to Muslim ibn Aqeel (as), the loyal cousin and trusted representative of Imam Hussain (as). His story is one of courage, isolation, and unwavering faith in the face of betrayal, and it stands as one of the most defining moments of the movement that led to Ashura.
A Trusted Voice from the House of the Prophet (saww)
Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) was the son of Aqeel ibn Abi Talib, the elder brother of Imam Ali (as). He was raised within the household of the Ahlulbayt (as) and was known among the companions for his calm judgement, physical courage, and quiet steadiness. When the people of Kufa sent thousands of letters inviting Imam Hussain (as) to lead them against tyranny, the Imam (as) needed someone who could be relied upon to read the situation truthfully and act with integrity.
Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) was that man. He combined the wisdom of a counsellor with the steadiness of a soldier, and he carried the full trust of the Imam (as) into one of the most dangerous cities of the Muslim world at the time.
Allah (swt) says in the Quran:
Surah Al-Imran, Ayah 169
The life and martyrdom of Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) remain a powerful example of this truth.
The Mission to Kufa
When Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) arrived in Kufa, he was met with overwhelming public support. Large numbers of people pledged allegiance to Imam Hussain (as) through him, giving the impression that the city was ready to stand for justice.
However, the situation changed rapidly after Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad (la) was appointed governor of Kufa. Through fear, intimidation, and political pressure, he weakened the resolve of the people. Many who had once publicly supported Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) abandoned him to protect themselves and their families. What had appeared to be loyalty quickly collapsed under pressure.
Hani ibn Urwa: A Companion in Sacrifice
In those final days, Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) was sheltered in the home of Hani ibn Urwa al-Muradi, a respected elder of Kufa and a known supporter of Imam Ali (as). Hani’s hospitality came at the highest possible cost. When Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad (la) discovered that Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) was being protected in Hani’s home, Hani was summoned, interrogated, beaten, and ultimately killed.
The deaths of these two men, often remembered together, were the first martyrdoms of the Karbala movement. Their story is a reminder that great sacrifices are rarely carried by one person alone. Behind every public act of courage there is often a quieter act of shelter, support, and trust.
Abandoned but Unshaken
Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) found himself deserted in a city that had once promised support. Yet even in those moments, he did not betray the mission of Imam Hussain (as).
Even after being captured, his concern remained for the Imam (as). One of his final requests was to send a message warning Imam Hussain (as) not to come to Kufa after witnessing the betrayal of its people. This request was denied. In captivity, his thoughts were centred on protecting the Imam (as) and safeguarding the mission he had been entrusted with.
This loyalty reflects the spirit later praised by Imam Hussain (as) on the eve of Ashura:
(Maqtal al-Hussain)
Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) embodied this devotion before the events of Karbala had even begun.
The First Martyr of Karbala
Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) was martyred in Kufa on 9 Dhul Hijjah 60 AH, only weeks before Imam Hussain (as) reached Karbala.
For this reason, he is often remembered as the first martyr of the Karbala movement. His sacrifice reveals an important reality: Karbala was not only a battle fought on the 10th of Muharram. It was also a struggle against fear, betrayal, and moral weakness that had already begun long before Ashura.
Lessons for Believers Today
The story of Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) carries particular meaning for our time. It reminds us that loyalty is rarely tested in moments of safety. It is tested when popular support disappears, when public opinion turns, and when the personal cost of standing for truth becomes real.
His story also reminds us that every great sacrifice is supported by quieter ones. Hani ibn Urwa opened his home and lost his life for it. In our time, honouring the values of the Ahlulbayt (as) often takes a similar form: sheltering the displaced, feeding the hungry, and restoring dignity to those whose own communities have forgotten them.
A Legacy of Loyalty and Sacrifice
Today, Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) continues to inspire believers around the world. His story reminds us that true loyalty is proven during moments of hardship, not comfort. His sacrifice also serves as a reminder that the path to Karbala began long before the Day of Ashura. It began with individuals who chose truth over safety and faith over fear.
Despite being abandoned by many around him, Muslim ibn Aqeel (as) remained steadfast until his final moments, leaving behind a legacy of courage, sincerity, and devotion to Imam Hussain (as).
