On Monday morning, 6th February 2023, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Syria and southern Turkiye has now killed over 22,000 people, and the number is rising. Thousands of people are still missing, believed to be trapped under rubble as rescue workers search mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area to save them before it is too late.

In Turkiye, more than 19,000 people have died across seven provinces and surrounding areas, with over 77,000 injured and nearly 3,500 people now being killed or wounded in Syria.

It is estimated that more than 6,400 buildings have been destroyed, and a staggering 23 million people are affected, most of them left homeless or displaced with no means to access food, clean water, shelter or other basic necessities.

The Zahra(s) Trust Canada’s local team mobilized as the disaster unfolded to provide immediate support following a rapid needs assessment.

So far, we have provided the following:

• Food items for thousands of displaced people, including 1,200 one-month family food parcels
• Baby milk formula and diapers
• Personal hygiene kits and disposable sanitary items
• Blankets for families left in the cold
• Informal mobile clinics with doctors to administer critical care
• Medicines and medical equipment
• Medicine storage units for hospitals

Many of these families have already suffered through conflict, disaster, and chronic poverty, and the effects of the earthquake will now leave thousands- if not millions- of families entirely and utterly destitute.

While families struggle to come to terms with losing their loved ones and their homes, hospitals also struggle to cope with the enormous influx of casualties and urgently require resources.

Our local field team is working tirelessly to ensure families receive urgent aid and assistance. And we need your support to continue providing relief to this earthquake’s victims.
